The Kansas City Chiefs are currently in the midst of an extraordinary run in the NFL, and a victory against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl would cement their place in history. The Chiefs have proven to be a powerhouse in recent years, and with a win in New Orleans, they would become one of the most dominant teams in the modern era.

However, with some key players, including veteran tight end Travis Kelce, getting older, there is growing speculation that this might be the last game for a few members of the team. Of course, if the Chiefs lose, there’s a chance some of those players may return for another season, but the future of their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, is a subject of particular interest.

Mahomes, at just 29 years old, is still in the prime of his career and likely has many more years of elite football ahead of him. Despite the conversation surrounding aging players, Mahomes has made it clear that he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. After learning that soccer legend Lionel Messi, who is 37, would be in attendance at the Super Bowl, the topic of career longevity came up.

Mahomes, known for his competitive nature, was asked how long he envisions playing in the NFL. “I want to get to 39 at least,” Mahomes said. “I mean, especially if I’m still playing at the level that he’s [Messi] playing at, then I’m going to try to stay on the field.”

The quarterback further emphasized his commitment to maintaining his physical fitness and staying sharp on the field. “I’ll try to keep my body in shape so I can play as long as I can, as long as it doesn’t take away from my family or hurt the football team,” Mahomes explained.

This means that the NFL could be in store for at least another decade of Mahomes leading the Chiefs, which is sure to leave many AFC teams, who have already been repeatedly bested by Mahomes and the Chiefs, dreading the years to come.

Mahomes’ drive for longevity is reflective of the aspirations many NFL players have as they seek long, successful careers. Given all his accomplishments, it’s hard to believe that Mahomes has only been in the league for eight years. His level of success so early in his career is remarkable, and the thought of him playing at this elite level until he’s 39 only adds to the excitement around his future.

If he continues at his current pace, a 39-year-old Mahomes could still be one of the NFL’s most dangerous quarterbacks. The future of the Chiefs, and of Mahomes in particular, looks incredibly bright, and fans can look forward to watching No. 15 work his magic for many more years to come.
