Despite the playoff letdown, the Vikings are in an excellent position to improve their roster significantly this offseason. With over $50 million in projected cap space, they have the financial flexibility to make big moves. While most of that cap space will likely be used to bolster the roster through free agency, the Vikings could also explore the trade market for an established star who can make an immediate impact.
One potential target for the Vikings is Myles Garrett, the former Defensive Player of the Year and a six-time Pro Bowl pass rusher for the Cleveland Browns. Garrett made headlines earlier this week by publicly requesting a trade, expressing a desire to join one of the NFL’s top contenders. While the Browns have not shown any indication of wanting to trade their franchise player, tensions could escalate, and they may become more open to the idea of a trade if Garrett’s situation worsens.
If the Browns do decide to move Garrett, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell suggests the Vikings could be a strong contender for his services. The Vikings already have a Pro Bowl-caliber pass rusher in Jonathan Greenard, but the addition of someone of Garrett’s caliber would be a huge boost to their defense. Minnesota also has Dallas Turner, the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, who is an intriguing young talent. However, Turner only played 28% of defensive snaps last season, so it remains to be seen whether he can develop into a Pro Bowl-level player in the future.
If the Vikings feel their Super Bowl window is wide open, going all-in on Garrett could make sense, adding an elite defender to pair with Greenard and strengthen their pass rush. However, they may also choose to be patient, allowing Turner more time to develop and see how he progresses as a player. In either case, the Vikings’ potential pursuit of Garrett could be one of the most exciting storylines of the offseason, and it will be interesting to see if they make a move to bring the star pass rusher to Minnesota.
