The Cincinnati Reds made seven roster cuts earlier this week and have now added another one today. This morning, the club announced that right-handed pitcher Josh Staumont has been reassigned to minor league camp. Staumont was not part of the 40-man roster, and with his reassignment, the Reds now have 53 players remaining in big league camp.

During the 2024 season, Staumont spent the year with the Minnesota Twins, appearing in 25 games and pitching 24.1 innings. He managed to keep the ball in the park, not allowing any home runs, and posted a solid 3.70 ERA. However, he struggled with his control, issuing 14 walks and recording 18 strikeouts over his time with the major league team.

This spring, Staumont made just one appearance, which came two weeks ago in a game against the San Francisco Giants. On February 23rd, he threw a hitless inning, walking one batter and striking out two. Since then, he has not pitched in any games. At 31 years old, it’s unclear whether Staumont was truly in contention for a roster spot or if an unreported injury has kept him sidelined.

As the Reds continue their spring training, expect more roster cuts to follow in the coming days. With the regular season just 19 days away, Cincinnati still has significantly more players in camp than they have spots available for the regular season roster. Every healthy player on the 40-man roster remains in big league camp, and there are still more than a dozen non-roster invitees also vying for a spot.

The next few days will likely bring more roster adjustments as the Reds finalize their lineup and pitching staff in preparation for the upcoming season.
