It will be challenging for Alabama football to have a player like Ryan Williams in 2024. The now-sophomore made an impression last season as a 17-year-old, showcasing a level of play that is rare for freshman receivers.

However, the Crimson Tide still boasts a talented group of freshman wide receivers for 2025. Derek Meadows and Lotzeir Brooks were both four-star recruits coming out of high school, and both received praise from Kalen DeBoer as Alabama resumed spring practice on Tuesday.

Meadows, who stands at 6-foot-5, is part of a growing trend of taller receivers for Alabama this season. Speaking after practice, DeBoer expressed his appreciation for the Nevada native’s performance so far.

“Derek, when you see him out there, he really stands out,” DeBoer said. “He’s tall and has a strong presence. I saw him in a one-on-one rep today, and it was great to see him use his body. Sometimes players with that presence don’t always utilize it, but he did. He’s got a long wingspan, so just get the ball in his area, and he’ll make the catch.”

Brooks, who is 5-foot-9 and 188 pounds, is a different type of receiver and has primarily been working in the slot. DeBoer praised the New Jersey native for his body control and downfield ability.

“Lotzeir is very explosive,” DeBoer said. “Both he and Meadows still have a lot to learn about feeling comfortable in the offense. Once they get there, they’ll be able to be more in sync with the quarterback and be where they need to be, on time. But Lotzeir has some natural instincts.”

“Sometimes it’s tough to spot certain players, but not him. He can make those plays. When the ball is in the air, he has that extra burst to get under it. Even when the ball is just out of reach, he seems to find a way to bring it in. He’s got that extra gear and can make tough catches.”

After a week off for spring break, Alabama football returned to practice on Tuesday. The team will continue their spring practices until April 12, when they will hold the A-Day spring game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
