Jameis Winston, the former Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, has found a new home in the NFL, signing a two-year contract with the New York Giants. The deal is worth $8 million, with the potential to reach $16 million based on performance incentives, likely linked to his playing time. Winston had been seeking a chance to compete for a starting quarterback role, and the Giants have provided him with that opportunity. The Giants recently moved on from their long-time starter, Daniel Jones, and may add another quarterback in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, specifically with their No. 3 overall pick.

Even if Winston doesn’t start right away, he brings valuable experience to the team. Having spent years as a capable backup, Winston has shown that he can contribute significantly when needed. He has also proven to be a positive influence in the locker room, capable of mentoring younger quarterbacks and stepping in when called upon. Winston’s professionalism and readiness to take over at a moment’s notice are assets the Giants are sure to appreciate.

In the 2024 season, Winston had the chance to showcase his skills as a starter for the Cleveland Browns, following an injury to Deshaun Watson. He played in 12 games, starting seven, and threw for 2,121 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His memorable moments included a standout performance in a Thursday Night Football win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he became an internet sensation for making snow angels after the victory.

Looking back on his career, Winston’s journey began at Florida State, where he arrived as a highly-touted five-star recruit in the 2012 class. He redshirted his first year but quickly emerged as a star under head coach Jimbo Fisher. In his redshirt freshman year, he led the Seminoles to an undefeated season and a dramatic BCS National Championship victory over Auburn. That year, he also became the youngest Heisman Trophy winner in history, completing 257 of 384 passes for 4,057 yards, 40 touchdowns, and just ten interceptions. Winston’s career at Florida State was remarkable, finishing with a 26-1 record as a starter. He still holds multiple program records, including the most single-season touchdown passes (40). Florida State honored him by retiring his jersey in 2023, and he remains a beloved figure in Tallahassee.
