Provo, UT — In a seismic recruiting victory that is sending shockwaves across college football, the BYU Cougars have secured a commitment from the nation’s top quarterback recruit, Jaxson Maddox — a 5-star standout from Overland Park, Kansas, and a former star at Kansas State University.

Maddox, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound quarterback with elite-level arm strength, top-tier pocket presence, and the mobility to extend plays under pressure, announced his decision to transfer to BYU on Monday evening via social media. The announcement came after weeks of speculation surrounding his departure from Kansas State, where he spent his freshman season showing flashes of brilliance in limited action.
During the 2024 season with the Wildcats, Maddox appeared in six games and threw for 912 yards and 7 touchdowns while adding 183 yards on the ground. Though he began the year as a backup, injuries and inconsistency in the depth chart opened the door for Maddox to display his capabilities. His performance in a near-upset against Texas — where he threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns — drew national attention and earned him a spot on several freshman All-American watchlists.
Citing a desire to play in a system that better utilizes his arm talent and leadership style, Maddox entered the transfer portal in early January. Within 24 hours, BYU emerged as a top contender.
“From the moment I visited Provo, I felt something different,” Maddox said in a statement. “Coach Sitake’s culture, the offensive scheme, and the incredible fan base made it feel like home. I want to be part of building something great here.”
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake called the signing a “program-defining moment,” adding that Maddox brings a level of competitiveness and maturity beyond his years.
With current quarterback battles heating up in Provo, Maddox is expected to compete for the starting job immediately. His addition gives BYU its highest-rated quarterback since Zach Wilson and injects new energy into a program looking to rise in the Big 12 ranks.
The future just got a whole lot brighter in Cougar Nation.
