Steelers Extend GM Omar Khan Through 2028 as Roster Overhaul Continues
Just weeks before training camp, the Pittsburgh Steelers have secured general manager Omar Khan with a new three-year contract extension, keeping him in the front office through the 2028 season. Khan, who initially signed a four-year deal in 2022 to succeed longtime GM Kevin Colbert, now holds more term than head coach Mike Tomlin, who’s under contract through 2027.
Khan, 48, has wasted no time putting his imprint on the franchise. Known for bold roster moves, he has pulled off high-profile trades—most notably acquiring DK Metcalf and Aaron Rodgers, while dealing away Minkah Fitzpatrick, George Pickens, and Diontae Johnson. He’s also orchestrated savvy draft-related deals, such as flipping Chase Claypool for what became the No. 32 overall pick in 2023, which the team used to select cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Steelers president Art Rooney II praised Khan’s impact, citing his work in the draft, trade market, and free agency. Since taking over, Khan has overhauled the team’s offensive and defensive lines and reshaped the quarterback room, moving on from Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and 2022 first-rounder Kenny Pickett, who was traded to the Eagles.

The front office is now focused on balancing short-term competitiveness with long-term flexibility. Khan has positioned Pittsburgh to gain four compensatory draft picks next April and will be hosting the NFL Draft in the city for the first time. With 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers likely nearing retirement, the hunt for a long-term quarterback continues.
As the team looks toward the future, one of Khan’s biggest looming challenges is the contract situation of star pass rusher T.J. Watt, who’s seeking a new deal after skipping mandatory minicamp. Watt, entering the final year of his contract, remains a cornerstone of the defense despite a late-season slump.
Khan’s tenure has also seen internal restructuring, including bringing in assistant GM Andy Weidl and refreshing the personnel department. His draft track record includes linemen Troy Fautanu and Derrick Harmon, with a decision on Broderick Jones’ fifth-year option coming next spring.
With key offseason additions like Patrick Queen and Darius Slay Jr., the Steelers are aiming for playoff success with a retooled roster built in Khan’s image. Now, with his own extension secured, Khan has both the time and authority to see that vision through.
