The New England Patriots are heading into training camp with a wide-open competition at wide receiver. With names like Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins, Ja’Lynn Polk, Kendrick Bourne, Javon Baker, and Efton Chism III all in the mix, there’s a lot to sort out in this newly retooled offense led by quarterback Drake Maye.

However, a recent trade proposal could see the Patriots add another dangerous weapon to their aerial attack.

Proposed Deal Has Patriots Acquiring Falcons TE Kyle Pitts

Brandon Austin of PFSN suggested a trade that would send former Pro Bowl tight end Kyle Pitts from the Atlanta Falcons to New England. In return, the Patriots would deal veteran TE Austin Hooper and a 2026 third-round pick to Atlanta.

“The Falcons seem more open to dealing Pitts following a disappointing 2024 season,” Austin noted. “If he’s made available, the Patriots could be a logical suitor.” Pitts, who was once a top-five pick, had a career-low 602 receiving yards and four touchdowns last season. His production has declined since a stellar rookie year in 2021 when he caught 68 passes for over 1,000 yards.

While Pitts hasn’t matched that debut campaign, his unique athleticism and size still make him an intriguing prospect. Austin emphasized that his value is at an all-time low, potentially allowing the Patriots to land a high-upside talent at a bargain.

“For New England, it’s a smart fit,” Austin continued. “They’ve got a league-leading $60 million in cap space and lack a true explosive tight end opposite Hunter Henry. Pitts, still only 24 and with elite physical tools, could thrive in Josh McDaniels’ two-tight-end system and give Maye a dynamic target.”

The deal would also be low-risk for New England. If Pitts can rediscover his early-career form in this contract year, he could emerge as a top-tier weapon. If not, the Patriots can move on in 2026 with little financial consequence. Austin concluded that the trade would give Atlanta a solid veteran and a Day 2 draft asset, while New England takes a calculated gamble on potential.

Could Another Veteran Receiver Be on the Radar?

Beyond Pitts, New England could still consider adding another experienced receiver—especially if Stefon Diggs isn’t 100% healthy. With names like Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen still unsigned, the Patriots have options.

Both veterans are coming off underwhelming seasons but could offer Maye a steady presence in the passing game. If Diggs stays healthy and the younger receivers step up, New England may opt to roll with its current group. Otherwise, another veteran addition remains a possibility before Week 1 of the 2025 season.
