The Milwaukee Brewers’ starting rotation looks solid for 2025, but they could still benefit from adding another pitcher.
Milwaukee brought in Frankie Montas during the 2024 season, but he declined his mutual option for 2025. It would be wise for the Brewers to seek another starter, and they could likely find a cost-effective option as a replacement.
The Brewers don’t need to target high-end free agent starters to remain competitive in 2025. After winning 93 games in 2024, the team mainly needs additional depth. In his suggestions for each team’s free agent moves, The Athletic’s Andy McCullough recommended that the Brewers sign former Atlanta Braves All-Star Michael Soroka.
“Michael Soroka, right-handed pitcher,” McCullough said. “Soroka had a stellar rookie season with Atlanta in 2019 before injuries derailed his career. He struggled as a starter for the White Sox last season, but after transitioning to the bullpen in May, he became an effective, multi-inning reliever. He could be a great fit for the Brewers, who excel at utilizing ‘out-getters’ like Soroka.”
Soroka could be a solid option for the Brewers’ No. 5 starter role. His best season came with Atlanta in 2019, posting a 2.68 ERA in 29 starts. Though he had a tough 2024 with the White Sox, he’s still only 27 years old.
The White Sox moved him to the bullpen, where he found success, but he’s still worth considering as a starter. Spotrac projects Soroka to receive a one-year deal worth around $2 million, a very affordable price. Milwaukee could easily sign him and let him compete for a rotation spot. If it doesn’t work out, he could be transitioned to the bullpen with ease.
