Nolan Arenado has remained a prominent figure in MLB trade discussions throughout much of the offseason. He has been a target for numerous teams, including the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and even the Houston Astros, who were in advanced talks to acquire the third baseman. However, Arenado exercised his no-trade clause, preventing the deal from going through.

Recently, as many teams have filled their first base needs and the market for infielders continues to dwindle, Arenado has become more open to considering trade possibilities beyond just the Boston Red Sox, who have emerged as the leading contenders to secure his services. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Arenado has been growing increasingly receptive to waiving his no-trade clause for more teams, which is a shift from his previous stance.

Morosi reported that Arenado’s mindset has evolved in recent days. Previously, when there were more options available, he may not have been as inclined to consider teams outside of Boston. However, after the Houston deal fell through, Arenado is now open to exploring trade options with other franchises, such as the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers. Both of these teams are still actively searching for quality offensive additions, and Arenado could be a key target for them moving forward. Although Boston remains the leading option, Arenado’s openness to these new possibilities marks a significant change in his approach to the trade market.

For the Red Sox, acquiring Arenado would significantly strengthen their infield. Although they already have Rafael Devers at third base, Arenado’s versatility and willingness to take on a new position could make him a strong fit at first base, where players like Triston Casas and Bobby Dalbec currently occupy the role. The Mariners and Tigers also present viable landing spots for Arenado. The Mariners could slot him at third base if Luis Urias departs in free agency, despite already having 2024 Gold Glove winner Dylan Moore. Similarly, the Tigers could use Arenado as an upgrade at third base over Matt Vierling.

As the days progress, it will become clearer where Arenado’s future lies. Regardless of which team ultimately acquires him, they will be getting an elite defender and a solid hitter, as evidenced by his impressive .272 batting average and 71 RBIs last season.
