On Thursday, just 13 days before pitchers and catchers report for spring training, the Cincinnati Reds made another significant move by signing free agent outfielder Austin Hays to a one-year contract. The 29-year-old Hays, who has shown considerable promise throughout his career, adds depth to the Reds’ roster as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

During the 2024 season, Hays played in 58 games with both the Baltimore Orioles and the Philadelphia Phillies, posting a .255 batting average, five home runs, and 20 RBIs. Most of his playing time was spent in left field, though he did make a few appearances in right field. Despite a slightly down year, Hays had an impressive 2023 season, making the American League All-Star team as the starting center fielder for the Orioles. In that season, he posted a solid .275 batting average, hit 16 home runs, and drove in 67 RBIs, demonstrating his potential as a key contributor at the plate and in the field.

Hays has been with the Orioles for the bulk of his career, joining the team in 2017 after being drafted by the club in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft from Jacksonville University. He spent seven seasons in Baltimore before being traded to the Phillies last July. His experience as both a center and left fielder makes him a versatile addition to the Reds’ outfield, and the team hopes that his bat can make a significant impact this season.

The Reds’ decision to sign Hays follows closely on the heels of another major acquisition. On Wednesday, the team traded for former All-Star left-handed pitcher Taylor Rogers from the San Francisco Giants. To make room for Rogers, the Reds designated right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina for assignment. With these moves, the Reds are clearly looking to strengthen their roster as they approach spring training, aiming to improve both their batting lineup and pitching staff for the upcoming season.
