In a somewhat unexpected move, the Minnesota Vikings have decided against placing the franchise tag on quarterback Sam Darnold, allowing the veteran to become a free agent. The deadline for tagging players is 4 p.m. Eastern time today, but the Vikings have firmly stated that Darnold has earned the opportunity to explore free agency.

For the second consecutive year, the Vikings face the prospect of losing their starting quarterback. After the 2023 season, the team declined to extend Kirk Cousins’ contract, and he subsequently signed a four-year, $180 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons.

Vikings’ Decision on Darnold

There was speculation that the Vikings might tag Darnold, who had a standout 2024 season, posting a 361-575 record with 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns. He led the Vikings to a 14-win season and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. The team was particularly impressed with his leadership both on and off the field.

The primary reason the Vikings might have tagged him was to trade him for multiple draft picks. With only four picks this year, including one compensatory pick, Minnesota is in desperate need of more draft capital, especially to address weaknesses on the offensive and defensive lines, at running back, and in the secondary. However, if they had tagged Darnold and couldn’t find a trade partner, they would have been on the hook for his $40 million contract, limiting their ability to address other roster needs. Moreover, teams are increasingly reluctant to part with valuable draft picks.

What’s Next?

Darnold now heads the list of quarterback free agents. Spotrac estimates his 2025 salary could reach as high as $40,123,661, and he could sign a four-year deal worth around $160,494,644.

As for potential landing spots, the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, and Las Vegas Raiders are among the top contenders. However, the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers could also be in the mix. With many teams needing a franchise quarterback and limited draft options, Darnold is likely to have several suitors and won’t come cheap.

The Vikings are now hoping their 2024 first-round draft pick, J.J. McCarthy, will be ready to start the season. After a torn meniscus suffered in a preseason game last year, McCarthy has made good progress in his recovery, and the team is optimistic he will be ready for Week 1. If not, former Giants starter Daniel Jones, who was added late last season, may take over until McCarthy is prepared to step in.
