Oregon is set to start its third different quarterback in three seasons, and this year’s starter will be the least experienced since 2020.

Dante Moore, a former five-star recruit, is expected to take the reins after transferring from UCLA on December 18, 2023. His talent is undeniable, and a relatively soft early schedule should give him time to settle in with a new offensive line and developing wide receivers before Big Ten play intensifies.

Although Austin Novosad remains in the mix, Moore is widely seen as the frontrunner.

Returning Starter: None
Other QBs: Dante Moore (R-So.), Austin Novosad (R-So.), Luke Moga (R-Fr.), Akili Smith Jr. (Fr.)
Departures: Dillon Gabriel, Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele (transferred to Cal)
Summer Additions: None

Outlook:
While the competition remains open on paper, Moore is the centerpiece of this year’s quarterback plan. After spending last season behind Dillon Gabriel and gaining limited experience, this fall represents Moore’s chance to prove how far he’s come since his freshman year at UCLA.

Still, it may take time to fully gauge his decision-making and accuracy. Oregon’s offensive line is experienced but untested as a unit, and the receiving corps is relatively young, presenting early obstacles despite a manageable opening stretch.

Novosad is a capable backup who could start for many Power Four programs and should get meaningful reps this year. Luke Moga has shown progress, particularly in the spring game, and brings athletic versatility. Akili Smith Jr. is likely to redshirt, positioning himself for the future.

Position Battle to Watch: Moga vs. Smith Jr. for the No. 3 spot, offering contrasting styles.
Player to Watch: Dante Moore — the long-anticipated five-star is finally at the helm, and Oregon fans are eager to see him deliver.
