The Cincinnati Reds fanbase eagerly anticipates TJ Friedl’s return to the team. As arguably the Reds’ most valuable player last year, Friedl has faced multiple injuries this season, landing him on the IL three times.
Initially sidelined due to a shoulder injury on Opening Day, Friedl later missed over a week after being hit on the hand, and he is currently recovering from a hamstring issue. However, indications suggest Friedl will soon rejoin the Reds’ lineup.
Friedl is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville starting this Sunday. Following a brief stint in the minors, Cincinnati plans to activate Friedl before their upcoming three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Upon Friedl’s return, the Reds face a roster decision that could potentially impact Austin Slater. Since joining the Reds a few weeks ago via a trade with the San Francisco Giants, Slater has struggled both defensively and offensively. His defensive lapses in the outfield and a batting average of just .154 with two hits in 13 at-bats have left much to be desired.
Another option for the Reds could involve sending Will Benson to Triple-A upon Friedl’s return. Benson, projected to be a regular in manager David Bell’s lineup, has had a challenging season, currently batting .190/.277/.380. He ranks poorly in strikeout rate (40.3%) and whiff rate (39.4%) according to Baseball Savant.
As the Reds prepare to welcome Friedl back, they face a decision between designating Slater for assignment or optioning Benson to Triple-A. The choice remains finely balanced, with performances in the upcoming week potentially swaying the team’s decision.
