If you’re curious about how LSU’s rushing attack has evolved from last season, recent practice sessions offer a clear perspective. On Monday morning, the Tigers showcased a distinct shift in their offensive strategy, moving away from their previous playbook to introduce new elements aimed at enhancing their run game.
During practice, the Tigers demonstrated several new formations and plays, including the pistol formation and offensive tackles pulling to provide blocks on shotgun tosses. This marks a departure from the tactics used over the past two years, which focused predominantly on inside handoffs and zone reads. The incorporation of these new concepts seems to be effective, especially in the absence of a dual-threat quarterback who had previously led the team in rushing.
The offensive line, in particular, was a standout during the fourth preseason practice. They consistently created opportunities for the running backs, whether the plays involved handoffs up the middle or tosses to the outside. This improvement has been evident throughout the spring practices as well, highlighting the line’s ability to adapt and perform under the new system.
Junior left tackle Will Campbell emphasized the significance of these changes, noting, “This year, we’ve introduced a lot more run schemes compared to last season. Last year, our focus was mainly on tight zone runs. This season, we’re incorporating a wider variety of schemes. It’s beneficial to diversify our approach and enhance our overall offensive strategy.”
The practice session included a full team period dedicated to the running backs, during which several notable plays unfolded. Despite not engaging in full contact, as the team was in shoulder pads, the running backs took advantage of the openings created by the offensive line. Senior Josh Williams, sophomore Kaleb Jackson, senior John Emery, and freshman Caden Durham all made significant gains, each benefiting from well-executed plays that showcased the line’s effectiveness.
The ability of the offensive line to create consistent running lanes is a promising sign for LSU as they transition into the new season. While there may be concerns about the defensive front’s capacity to keep up, the Tigers are confident in their offensive line’s experience and talent.
