The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson to a one-year contract, reuniting him with the team despite his six-game suspension to start the season.
Gipson, who previously played three seasons with Jacksonville from 2016 to 2018 and was a key player on the 2017 team that reached the AFC Championship, will begin practicing with the team on Monday. Although he will miss the first part of the season, he could serve as a seasoned backup once his suspension ends in late October.
Gipson will be eligible to return for Jacksonville’s Week 7 matchup against New England in London. He was suspended in early July for a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
Recently turning 34, Gipson started all 16 games for San Francisco last season and has 165 starts in 173 career regular-season games with Cleveland, Jacksonville, Houston, Chicago, and the 49ers. He has 33 career interceptions and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014 with the Browns.
The Jaguars are currently missing veteran safety Andrew Wingard due to a knee injury that may keep him out for several months.
