The St. Louis Blues turned a typically quiet August morning into a newsworthy event by announcing they have issued offer sheets to Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway.
According to Section 10.3 of the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement, the Oilers have seven days to exercise their right of first refusal to match each offer sheet.
To cover the necessary compensation should Edmonton decline, the Blues have reacquired a 2025 second-round pick previously traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins and swapped picks with the Penguins to obtain a 2026 fifth-round pick. This was in exchange for the Blues’ 2026 second-round pick and a 2025 third-round pick from Ottawa, acquired for Mathieu Joseph.
Broberg’s offer is a two-year deal with an average annual value of $4,580,917, which requires a second-round draft pick as compensation. Holloway’s offer is a two-year contract at $2,290,457 AAV, necessitating a third-round draft pick as compensation.
Broberg, 23, has appeared in 81 regular-season games and 20 playoff games for the Oilers over the past three seasons, with two goals and 11 assists. He was drafted 8th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Holloway, 22, has played 89 regular-season games and 26 playoff games for the Oilers since his 2022-23 debut. He was selected 14th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft and has recorded nine goals and nine assists in his first two seasons.
These offer sheets are the first since August 28, 2021, when the Carolina Hurricanes made an offer to Jesperi Kotkaniemi of the Montreal Canadiens, which was not matched. The Canadiens received first- and third-round picks in 2022 from the Hurricanes as compensation.
