Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, a former standout at Auburn and a fifth overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, has made a notable return to the NFL, this time as the running backs coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. Williams, who previously shined as a running back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, is now focused on guiding a new generation of players in his coaching role.
Reflecting on his early days in the NFL, Williams recalled his awe at joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sharing, “Stepping into the locker room with Coach Jon Gruden, Derrick Brooks, Simeon Rice, and Ronde Barber was a revelation. I was amazed to be surrounded by players I had long admired.
Williams had a distinguished career with Auburn, setting a school record for rushing touchdowns and accumulating 3,831 rushing yards. Despite his success, his NFL transition was a profound experience that underscored the magnitude of the league.
Now, as he steps into his new role with the Raiders, Williams is bringing his wealth of experience and insight to a crucial position. He previously served as Auburn’s running backs coach and interim head coach, showcasing his leadership and coaching abilities. His time as interim head coach saw mixed results, with Auburn experiencing some highs and lows before hiring Hugh Freeze as the new head coach.
At the Raiders, Williams is tasked with mentoring a running backs group that is undergoing significant changes. The departure of Josh Jacobs, who led the NFL in rushing yards in 2022, has left a void that Williams is eager to fill. Jacobs’ exit to the Green Bay Packers leaves Zamir White, who showed promise last season, as a key player. White will be looked to as a primary back, following a strong finish to the 2023 season.
Williams is also working with Alexander Mattison, a new addition from the Minnesota Vikings, as well as veteran Ameer Abdullah, who brings a decade of NFL experience to the room. Abdullah’s extensive career, marked by various roles from starter to third-down back, is seen as a valuable asset for the younger players.
With the preseason underway, Williams is focused on instilling toughness, discipline, and a winning mindset in his players. “To play running back, you’ve got to be a bit unconventional,” Williams said. “You need to be tough and resilient, ready to handle the physical demands of the position.”
