Javier Báez CHICAGO — A.J. Hinch, manager of the Tigers, has been closely observing Javier Báez’s behind-the-scenes efforts despite Báez’s challenging season at the plate. Although Báez has struggled, his dedication remains evident. “He’s kept a positive outlook,” Hinch remarked before the Tigers’ 3-1 loss to the Cubs. “He’s been working through physical issues and hasn’t let his difficulties get him down. He’s fully committed, and I value that.”
Despite Báez’s ongoing struggles, he remains a vital veteran for the Tigers. However, the team must consider both immediate and future needs, which includes delivering some tough news to Báez. “I hope his hard work will start reflecting on the field. I’ve informed him that his playing time will be reduced after this series,” Hinch said.
Báez started at shortstop on Tuesday, his first game at Wrigley Field since his trade from the Cubs to the Mets in 2021. He received a video tribute and standing ovations, highlighting the significance of this series for the 31-year-old.
The final stretch of the 2024 season offers the Tigers a chance to evaluate their young talent. Rookie Trey Sweeney, recently called up from Triple-A Toledo, could potentially share shortstop duties with Báez, especially against right-handed pitchers. Sweeney, acquired in the Jack Flaherty trade, has performed well in Triple-A, hitting .281 with an .854 OPS against right-handers. Meanwhile, Báez is hitting .182/.220/.294 with six homers and 37 RBIs in 79 games this season.
Báez acknowledged the challenges of this season but remains committed to working hard. “These years haven’t gone as I or the fans hoped,” he said. “But I’m determined to keep fighting and stay out there as long as I can.”
Hinch commended Báez’s professionalism and understanding of the team’s needs. “He’s been very professional and honest. He understands the organization’s situation and sees the need to evaluate young players, even if it means fewer reps for him,” Hinch noted.
Once a promising player with the Cubs, Báez sees parallels with the current Tigers’ roster, which includes several young players. “It feels similar to my time with the Cubs,” he said. “We’re growing together here in Detroit, and I believe we can achieve great things with our young talent.”
Báez’s leadership and experience continue to be valuable assets for the Tigers, even as the team transitions to a future led by emerging young stars.
