The New York Knicks are looking to bolster their frontcourt depth following Isaiah Hartenstein’s departure to the Oklahoma City Thunder in free agency, subsequent to acquiring Mikal Bridges and extending OG Anunoby to a substantial contract.
Currently, Mitchell Robinson stands as the sole center on the roster with a guaranteed contract. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Knicks have expressed interest in Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler as a potential trade target.
In his column, Scotto reported, “The Knicks have also explored the trade market, expressing interest in Jazz center Walker Kessler, league sources told HoopsHype, along with Hornets center Nick Richards, as previously noted by HoopsHype.”
“There’s a belief among rival executives that Utah would entertain trade inquiries for Kessler, whereas last year, the feeling was he was not available,” Scotto added.
Walker Kessler is recognized as one of the premier shot-blocking big men in the league, averaging 2.4 blocks per game over his career. Despite finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2022-23, Kessler’s progress in Utah has not met all expectations, starting only 22 of 64 games in his second season while averaging 8.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 23.3 minutes per game this past year.
The acquisition of Walker Kessler would be a significant addition for the New York Knicks, particularly considering his team-friendly contract, which sees him earning approximately $3 million in the 2024-25 season.
With the Knicks already surpassing the league’s salary cap at $154.5 million but staying below the “First Apron” limit of $178.13 million, crafting an enticing offer for Walker Kessler could prove challenging, especially after their recent trade of five first-round picks for Mikal Bridges.
