The Auburn Tigers are aiming to enhance their defensive performance this season, building on a solid showing from the previous year. With head coach Hugh Freeze bringing in DJ Durkin as the new defensive coordinator, Auburn’s defense is expected to see significant improvements. The team benefits from the return of several key veterans, including senior cornerback Keionte Scott, who plays a crucial role both in the defensive backfield and as a punt returner.

As the season opener approaches in just four days, Scott shared his thoughts on the current state of the defense. “Coach Durkin has done an excellent job with the installs and the preparation,” Scott said. “We’ve been reviewing the plays repeatedly, and now we’re focusing on refining the finer details of our defensive strategies.”

Another key player, cornerback Champ Anthony, is anticipated to take on a larger role this year. Scott praised Anthony’s development during the offseason. “Champ has gained a lot of mental reps,” Scott noted. “He has clearly been paying close attention and applying what he’s learned. It’s exciting to see him put those lessons into practice and perform well. I’m looking forward to watching him on the field.

Sophomore cornerback Kayin Lee is also generating buzz within Auburn’s secondary. Scott expressed optimism about Lee’s prospects for the upcoming season. “You can see that Kayin is moving with confidence after getting some playing time last year,” Scott remarked. “He’s stepping into a starting role and consistently meeting with Coach Crime (Wes McGriff) to hone his skills. I’m eager to see how he continues to develop and contribute.”

Despite dealing with a recent hamstring injury, Scott feels prepared for the season. “The training staff has been great, and it all depends on how my body feels,” Scott said. “I’m particularly excited about returning to punt return duties, where I can create momentum and make explosive plays for the offense. It’s something I take great pride in.”

Scott, as a seasoned veteran in the defensive backfield, is ready to leverage his experience to support Auburn’s success in 2024. His role will be crucial in guiding both new and returning players as the team aims to build on their defensive strengths and make an impact this season.
