The Baltimore Orioles have surged to the top of the American League East, currently holding a one-game lead as the struggling New York Yankees have stumbled with a 2-8 record in their last 10 games.
Despite losing three starting pitchers to injuries in recent weeks, this could be the Orioles’ toughest stretch of the season, a daunting prospect for their competitors across MLB.
Expectations are high for the Orioles to be aggressive at the trade deadline, particularly in bolstering their starting pitching depth. While their specific targets remain uncertain—whether for depth or star power—Baltimore possesses the assets to pursue either option.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com highlighted key questions for American League teams leading up to the deadline, particularly focusing on whether the Orioles can secure the starting pitcher they need.
“If any team has the resources to make a significant move, it’s the Orioles, who entered the season ranked first in MLB Pipeline’s organizational rankings,” Feinsand noted.
“Even after promoting Rodriguez, Henderson, Cowser, and Westburg in the past year (and trading Hall and Ortiz for Burnes), Baltimore still boasts four of baseball’s top 20 prospects (including No. 1 Jackson Holliday, No. 12 Samuel Basallo, No. 18 Coby Mayo, and No. 20 Heston Kjerstad). Should GM Mike Elias choose to pursue someone like Crochet from the White Sox, the Orioles have the assets to make a compelling offer.”
Feinsand’s analysis underscores the Orioles’ formidable farm system, widely regarded as one of the strongest in baseball.
As the trade deadline looms, Baltimore faces critical decisions. While they are well-positioned to contend for a World Series title, the path to success is fraught with challenges. Even with upgrades to their starting rotation, success is not guaranteed, yet it would undoubtedly enhance their chances and strengthen their World Series aspirations.
