Approximately two months after his release, veteran catcher Christian Bethancourt made a significant impact by playing a crucial role in the Chicago Cubs’ dramatic 14-10 comeback victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
Bethancourt, who is 32 years old, has now joined a select group of catchers in Major League Baseball history. According to Stathead, he is only the fifth catcher to achieve the remarkable feat of recording at least three hits and driving in seven or more runs in a game while batting in the ninth position. This prestigious list includes notable names such as Mike Zunino (2017), Charles Johnson (2000), Joe Girardi (1999), and Jerry Grote (1981).
Historically, before the National League introduced the designated hitter rule in 2022, pitchers typically batted in the last spot in the lineup. This often meant that catchers like Bethancourt, who were known for their defensive skills rather than their offensive prowess, batted ahead of the pitchers. Despite this context, Bethancourt’s accomplishment remains extraordinary. Only 10 catchers have managed to achieve a game with at least three hits and seven RBIs while batting from the eighth position.
Overall, Bethancourt is the 49th catcher in MLB history, regardless of their lineup position, to accomplish this feat. He is also one of only three catchers to achieve it this season, joining Jake Rogers of the Detroit Tigers and J.T. Realmuto of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Bethancourt’s journey to this standout performance has been notable. After being released by the Miami Marlins on June 27, he faced uncertainty but found a new opportunity with the Chicago Cubs. Despite limited playtime with the Cubs, Bethancourt has been making the most of his chances. During his tenure with the Marlins, he appeared in 38 games and hit two home runs with eight RBIs, but struggled with a batting average of .159 and a .198 on-base percentage.
Since joining the Cubs on July 5, Bethancourt has experienced a remarkable turnaround. Over 11 games with Chicago, he has posted an impressive .407 batting average, a .448 on-base percentage, and a .889 slugging percentage. During this period, he has added three home runs and 15 RBIs to his tally.
