Richmond has not set a specific timeline for Dustin Martin’s decision on his future. Tigers coach Adem Yze disclosed that he had discussions with the veteran free agent earlier this year, emphasizing that the focus on Martin’s career decision will continue until at least the end of this month.
Speculation surrounding Dustin Martin’s future has resurfaced this week, particularly after Melbourne great David Schwarz asserted that the three-time Norm Smith Medal winner would sign a multi-year contract with the Gold Coast Suns.
Richmond’s focus remains on ensuring Martin’s happiness at Punt Road and maintaining his focus on performing at the highest level each week.
Earlier this season, coach Adem Yze approached Martin to discuss the potential rekindling of talks about his future as early as this month, with both parties prioritizing their on-field commitments.
Yze, who is a close friend and former teammate of Schwarz, dismissed recent rumors as “speculation,” emphasizing that no timeline has been set for the 300-game player’s decision.
However, Yze did reveal that Richmond and Martin could resume discussions in the coming month after putting them on hold.
“David Schwarz is a good mate of mine. That’s all speculation. All I know is Dustin is arriving at the building today in good spirits and enjoying his time here,” Yze said regarding the speculation surrounding Martin.
“I’ve always said he will make decisions about his future in the coming weeks. Right now, he’s focused on training and putting himself in contention for selection.”
“Earlier this year, I did try to push for a timeline, suggesting maybe end of July or start of August, just so we could make those decisions. It’s getting close to that now, but we haven’t set a specific timeline. Our main priority is Dustin’s happiness and health while he’s with us, and he can make those decisions when the time is right.
“He’s been in a really good space for the last six weeks. We had a discussion about focusing on the present and putting off thoughts about the future until later in the year, so he can come in with energy. It’s similar to the conversation I had with Liam Baker. It’s tough to balance decision-making and high-level performance simultaneously. Right now, Dustin is in that mindset and seems content.
“Dustin isn’t the only one considering his future at Richmond. Liam Baker, another key player coming off contract, has attracted interest from West Coast and Fremantle, both eager to bring the tough midfielder back to Western Australia.
“With players like Liam, it’s natural for discussions to occur mid-season. As an industry, we’ve matured in understanding these processes. Players need to make informed decisions about their careers, and we support that. Our focus is on creating an environment where they want to stay, and decisions will unfold naturally later in the year.
“I don’t see any issue with our players exploring their options and ensuring they’re making the right choices for their futures.”
