The Buffalo Bills are adding a former rival quarterback to their practice squad, and he comes with a quirky stipulation.
On August 28, the team announced the signing of Mike White, previously with the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, to address their depth concerns following injuries. White, who was injured in a December 2022 game against the Bills, endured a significant hit from linebacker Matt Milano that resulted in broken ribs. He ended up hospitalized after that game.
Reporter Matt Bove highlighted a humorous condition White had upon joining the Bills: he requested not to be locker mates with Milano, joking that part of his rib might still be at Highmark Stadium.
White is set to be the Bills’ No. 3 quarterback but could step in to back up Josh Allen if Mitch Trubisky, recovering from a knee injury, isn’t ready for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on September 8. General Manager Brandon Beane remains cautiously optimistic about Trubisky’s availability but hasn’t ruled out placing him on injured reserve.
The team also faced other quarterback injuries, losing Shane Buechele to a neck issue and later releasing veterans Ben DiNucci and Anthony Brown after the preseason.
White, 29, has played in 14 NFL games with seven starts, all with the Jets, accumulating 2,219 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
White’s resilience was evident during his injury against the Bills in 2022, where he continued to play despite the pain and was later hospitalized with a rib fracture. He expressed his determination to finish the game, saying he would have to be physically removed from the field to stop him.
