September call-ups can carry various implications depending on the team, and for the Boston Red Sox this year, they might be more significant than ever.
On Sunday, the Red Sox will gain two additional roster spots, which they are expected to use for one position player and one pitcher. This move presents a chance to inject some much-needed energy into a fatigued roster.
With rookie speedster David Hamilton recently injured, it’s likely the Red Sox will add someone capable of covering second base. This opens up the possibility for Boston’s offseason trade acquisition, who has so far underperformed, to get another opportunity.
The Red Sox acquired second baseman Vaughn Grissom from the Atlanta Braves over the winter in exchange for Chris Sale, who has since returned to his Hall-of-Fame form with the Braves. Meanwhile, Grissom is now back in the minors, making the trade subject to scrutiny, especially since Sale had been struggling with injuries in Boston since 2019.
According to Christopher Smith of MassLive, Grissom is a candidate to be recalled on Sunday, although Enmanuel Valdez might have a slight advantage. Grissom has recorded 10 hits in his last 20 at-bats with Triple-A Worcester.
Manager Alex Cora has expressed optimism about Grissom’s recent performance. “We put a program together for him a month and a half ago,” Cora said, as reported by Smith. “He’s been making better contact and hitting the ball harder. He’s been disciplined, and that’s leading to better results.”
Grissom struggled with a .148/.207/.160 slash line in his 23 major league games this season before being placed on the injured list for the second time. He was then sent on a rehab assignment to Worcester on July 20, before being optioned back to Triple-A full-time on August 8.
Despite a rocky start in Boston this spring, a successful performance in September could significantly improve Grissom’s standing with the team and alter the narrative surrounding his role for next season.
