Running back Chris Brooks is now a free agent after the Miami Dolphins released him with an injury settlement on Monday, as reported by NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. This release allows Brooks to sign with any team, though if he were to rejoin the Dolphins, league rules stipulate that it wouldn’t be possible for at least three weeks plus the length of the settlement.
Chris Brooks’ attempt to secure a spot on the active roster this summer ended when he was waived/injured last week during the roster cutdown to 53 players.
After a concussion protocol setback from a hit in the preseason game against the Washington Commanders—just after a notable 59-yard run—Brooks’ roster hopes were dashed.
Joining the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent from BYU in 2023, Brooks initially showed promise with his notable size, which was seen as a valuable addition to the Dolphins’ running back group.
He managed to make the 53-man roster last year and, despite limited playing time, made an impact with a 52-yard run against the Denver Broncos in Week 3 and a 28-yard run in the Week 6 win over the Carolina Panthers. However, he injured his leg in that Carolina game, leading to a stint on injured reserve. Although the Dolphins designated him to return, his opportunities were limited to just three additional games and only three more rushing attempts.
The addition of rookie fourth-round pick Jaylen Wright and the strong performance of veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. further complicated Brooks’ chances of making the roster this year.
