The Las Vegas Raiders initially included defensive tackle Byron Young on their 53-man roster, but they made a surprising decision to release him, despite having used a third-round pick on him just a year earlier.
Young was quickly claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles, making a return to the Raiders unlikely in the near future. He has since shared his reaction to the release, revealing that he was caught off guard by the decision.
“They didn’t even ask me to bring the playbook,” Young told CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr on September 3. “They just had me meet with the GM, who said they were moving in a different direction. The head coach confirmed it, so I left and came here.”
Although Young was blindsided by the move, he acknowledges the nature of the business.
“I was completely caught off guard. It seemed like everyone else was too,” Young said. “Sometimes things just happen. It’s part of the business.”
During his rookie season, Young played in only six games and recorded four tackles. With the Raiders adding defensive tackle Christian Wilkins in free agency, the team had fewer roster spots available for his position.
Byron Young’s Motivation
Despite the setback, Young views his release as an opportunity. He believes the Raiders’ decision could be a chance to prove them wrong.
“It’s nice to be wanted,” Young said. “It’s a lot of motivation. I want to come here and make an impact.”
Young admitted he feels a chip on his shoulder from being released but is excited about his new opportunity with the Eagles, implying that he feels he is in a better situation now.
“There’s a chip on my shoulder because they kinda just threw me to the wayside, but I feel like I’m in a much better situation here with a much better team. I’m excited to be here.”
Had Young stayed with the Raiders, his role this season might have been minimal. It remains to be seen how much he will play for the Eagles initially, as he may need some time to acclimate to the new system.
For now, Young is focused on continuing his development and work ethic.
“Just continue doing what I’m doing,” Young said. “I was making progress in Vegas, and a lot of guys and coaches saw that. I want to keep that momentum going.”
Young hopes to become a key player for the Eagles in the long term and is eager to make an immediate impact this season.
“I hope to be another key piece for the next few years,” Young said. “That’s really what I want. I want to make an impact right away this year.”
