The Chicago Cubs are approaching a critical juncture in the 2024 season. Despite initial expectations of contending for the postseason, their fortunes have taken a downturn.

Previously seen as buyers leading up to the MLB trade deadline, the Cubs now face the possibility of becoming sellers amidst their struggles. Over the next few weeks, players on the roster may find themselves playing to secure their positions.

If Chicago fails to reverse their fortunes soon, General Manager Jed Hoyer may have little choice but to entertain offers for some of their talented players. Among those drawing interest is standout first baseman and outfielder Cody Bellinger.

Bellinger’s name has surfaced in recent MLB trade rumors as rival teams monitor Chicago’s situation closely. FanSided has even proposed a hypothetical trade scenario involving Bellinger heading to the Atlanta Braves.

In this proposed deal, the Cubs would receive right-hander JR Ritchie, catcher Drake Baldwin, left-hander Dylan Dodd, and outfielder Jesse Franklin V in exchange for Bellinger.

Ritchie currently ranks as the Braves’ No. 4 prospect, Baldwin as No. 11, Dodd as No. 15, and Franklin as No. 26, highlighting the potential depth and talent Chicago could acquire.

For Atlanta, acquiring Bellinger would represent a significant boost to their lineup and postseason aspirations. Despite a slightly diminished performance this season, Bellinger’s track record and contractual flexibility make him an attractive target.

While this trade proposal remains speculative, it presents a logical scenario benefiting both teams should the Cubs decide to entertain offers for Bellinger.
