The Green Bay Packers dedicated significant effort this offseason to evaluating backup quarterback options behind Jordan Love. Despite having Sean Clifford, a 2023 fifth-round pick, as the backup last season, they sought to improve the position’s quality. Consequently, they selected Michael Pratt in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
However, both Clifford and Pratt underperformed during the preseason. Their lackluster showings led Green Bay to trade a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Tennessee Titans for Malik Willis to back up Love.
After Love sustained a sprained MCL in the Packers’ Week One loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, fans and analysts urged the team to consider signing veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill, who played for the Titans last year, had a modest performance with 1,616 passing yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 10 games.
Reports emerged suggesting the Packers were interested in Tannehill, but NFL insider Tom Pelissero clarified that the team has not, and will not, pursue Tannehill or any other veteran quarterback. The Packers are optimistic that Love will return sooner than the projected 3-6 week recovery period and are concentrating on preparing Malik Willis and Sean Clifford. Some speculation about Tannehill’s fit with Green Bay was based on a mix-up of dates regarding his time with former Packers offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur, who joined Green Bay in 2019, after Tannehill’s arrival in Tennessee.
