One of the central figures in the Cubs’ offseason plans is outfielder Cody Bellinger. Bellinger’s future with the team is a major point of speculation, as he has the option to opt out of his current contract and explore free agency. This decision could significantly impact the Cubs’ roster and financial strategy for the next season.

Bleacher Report analyst Joel Reuter recently weighed in on the situation, forecasting that Cody Bellinger is likely to test the open market. Reuter noted, “The 29-year-old can opt out of the final two years of his three-year, $80 million deal this winter. Despite not having stellar numbers this season, his age and previous track record make him an attractive candidate for teams seeking a dynamic outfielder. With rising stars like Pete Crow-Armstrong emerging as the future center fielder and Michael Busch settling into first base, letting Bellinger walk and reallocating those funds elsewhere could be a strategic move for the Cubs if he opts out.”

Bellinger’s departure would indeed create a significant void in the Cubs’ lineup. Over the 2024 season, Bellinger has appeared in 110 games, hitting 15 home runs and driving in 61 runs, while maintaining a slash line of .267/.325/.424. Although these numbers fall short of his peak performance, they are still notable contributions. Bellinger has battled through persistent injuries this season, which have impeded his ability to find his rhythm at the plate.

In early September, Bellinger showed signs of a strong finish, with a slash line of .294/.333/.471, including a home run and four RBIs over the first four games of the month. If he can sustain this performance through the remainder of the season, his decision to test free agency may become even more likely.

As the offseason approaches, the Cubs face a crucial decision regarding Bellinger’s future. His choice will not only affect the team’s lineup but also dictate how aggressively the Cubs pursue improvements in the offseason. With significant changes on the horizon, Bellinger’s decision will be a defining factor in shaping the Cubs’ strategy and aspirations for the upcoming season.
