While Jake Ferguson’s situation is improving, the Dallas Cowboys might consider bolstering their tight end position by signing former New York Jets TE C.J. Uzomah. Despite a challenging offseason for Uzomah, he could be a strong addition for the Cowboys.
Ferguson avoided a serious injury in Week 1, but it’s wise for Dallas to have a backup plan. Uzomah, recently released by the Philadelphia Eagles, could be a valuable asset. Although he hasn’t had standout numbers, with 192 catches, 1,891 yards, and 16 touchdowns, his experience could be beneficial for the Cowboys, who have relatively inexperienced tight ends like Luke Schoonmaker and Hunter Luepke.
If Ferguson’s condition worsens, bringing in a seasoned player like Uzomah would be a prudent move.
However, the Cowboys might not need to worry too much. After Ferguson’s injury against the Cleveland Browns, there were concerns about a severe ACL injury. Fortunately, Ferguson reported significant improvement, with his knee pain decreasing from a 10 to a zero, and it appears to be just a minor bone bruise rather than a serious issue.
Ferguson, a key player who had a breakout season in 2023 with 71 receptions, 761 yards, and 5 touchdowns, could avoid missing time if his condition continues to improve.
In the meantime, some believe the Cowboys already have a capable replacement in FB Hunter Luepke. According to Blogging the Boys writer Brian Martin, Luepke’s versatility could provide an edge. He could effectively fill in for Ferguson, as he has shown the ability to play both tight end and fullback, and was utilized in a tight end role against Cleveland.
Fans might see more of Luepke in the coming weeks, given his potential to adapt and contribute to the Cowboys’ offense.
