Jordan Montgomery, a top free agent, was coming off what many consider his best season in 2023. The left-handed pitcher, who started the season with the Cardinals before being traded to the Texas Rangers, had a 3.20 ERA over 32 starts and played a crucial role in the Rangers’ World Series victory. He was anticipated to secure a long-term contract, but negotiations didn’t go as expected.
Reports suggest that Jordan Montgomery did receive offers, including a four-year contract from the Yankees, as noted by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Heyman remarked on Montgomery’s dissatisfaction with his free agency situation, considering his substantial earnings and current performance. He also pointed out that the Boston Red Sox had shown interest in offering a four-year deal, but Montgomery did not pursue it, possibly missing out on a better opportunity.
Montgomery, who previously spent over five seasons with the Yankees before being traded to the Cardinals in 2022, apparently wasn’t inclined to rejoin New York.
