The New York Jets have suffered a significant setback with the loss of one of their key players. Pass rusher Jermaine Johnson revealed in a brief social media video that he has torn his Achilles and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season.

In his message, Johnson expressed gratitude for the support he’s received, stating, “Thank everyone for all the prayers and support! This is not a dark time for me, although there will be dark days ahead, this is God’s way for me to not only grow as a man, person, and player but also to inspire others! I will be back and better, BOOK IT.”

In another video, Johnson shared the news of his injury, saying, “It’s official man, the MRI just came back with bad news, but we’re good. I tore my Achilles, but we are in great spirits. This is just another opportunity to show what I’ve come from. Let’s get it.”

Johnson, 25, had been a standout player with a promising career ahead, including a Pro Bowl season and impressive stats with 10 sacks, 21 quarterback hits, and seven pass deflections over his career. His absence leaves a significant void for the Jets, who will need to find replacements to fill his role.

Head coach Robert Saleh emphasized the need for a collective effort to compensate for Johnson’s loss. He noted that while it’s a setback, the team’s deep defensive line rotation will help manage the gap, stressing that it’s a “next man up” situation.

The Jets will now rely on a mix of lesser-known players, including Micheal Clemons, Takk McKinley, Leonard Taylor III, Solomon Thomas, Eric Watts, and Braiden McGregor. This group, which includes mid-round draft picks, undrafted free agents, and former first-round picks, will need to step up in Johnson’s absence.

Despite the challenge, the Jets’ coaching staff has a track record of overcoming adversity, as seen in their recent win against the Tennessee Titans despite missing key defensive starters. The team will need to harness that resilience to navigate the rest of the 2024 season without Johnson.
