As they prepare for Week 4, the Rams can finally breathe easier, as they are set to welcome back two players who had been suspended: backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and offensive lineman Alaric Jackson. This news is especially promising given the significant injury woes the Rams have faced this season.
While Garoppolo’s return is a boost, he is expected to remain in a secondary role behind Stafford. There’s even a chance he could fall to third on the depth chart, behind rookie Stetson Bennett. Given this situation, it seems unlikely that Garoppolo will see much playing time this season.
Despite this, the former 49ers and Raiders quarterback has emerged as a potential trade candidate, with the Miami Dolphins reportedly eyeing him as a possible replacement for Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins are currently in a precarious situation after Tagovailoa suffered another concussion, putting both his 2024 season and his overall career in jeopardy. In Week 3, backup quarterback Skylar Thompson struggled significantly, leaving much to be desired in his performance.
Compounding the issue, Thompson has now been labeled “day-to-day” with his own injury, leaving the Dolphins with only two healthy quarterbacks: recently signed Tyler “Snoop” Huntley and veteran Tim Boyle. Head coach Mike McDaniel has indicated that the team will explore all available quarterback options, and Garoppolo could be a viable choice.
Garoppolo is familiar with McDaniel’s offensive system, having previously worked with him during their time with the 49ers. McDaniel served as the offensive coordinator for San Francisco in 2023 and was the run game coordinator from 2017 to 2020, which could facilitate a smooth transition for Garoppolo should he join the Dolphins.
According to a report from Bleacher Report, Garoppolo is listed as a prime candidate for trade to Miami, particularly after the Dolphins placed Tagovailoa on injured reserve. The earliest he could return is Week 8, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Media noted that Tagovailoa is consulting with concussion specialists, and there is currently no definitive timeline for his comeback. Given his history of concussions, the situation remains uncertain.
While Thompson has been thrust into the starting role, his limited experience poses risks, especially with the Dolphins looking to contend in the competitive AFC East. Garoppolo’s recent reinstatement after a two-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy adds to his appeal, as his experience could prove invaluable, even as a backup.
The Rams, known for their willingness to acquire trade assets, might find a sixth or seventh-round pick appealing in exchange for Garoppolo. While he may currently be the second-string quarterback on the roster, Bennett appears prepared to step into a starting role if necessary. As the Rams navigate their quarterback situation, the potential for Garoppolo to find a new home in Miami could be a win-win for both parties.
