PHOENIX (AP) – The San Diego Padres will be without one of their key players, shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, as he is set to undergo season-ending surgery on his troubled right shoulder. This development comes as the team prepares for the postseason, leaving a significant gap in their infield.

Kim initially injured his shoulder on August 18 during a matchup against the Colorado Rockies. Since that day, he has been sidelined and was hoping to make a return just in time for the playoffs. Known for his impressive defensive skills, Kim earned a Gold Glove award last year primarily while playing second base. Unfortunately, he now faces a surgery to address a small tear in his labrum.

Reflecting on his situation, Kim expressed his frustration about the injury. “I really tried everything to come back and help the team,” he told MLB.com through an interpreter on Saturday. “But my body just wouldn’t listen to my mind. So I think, as of now, my season is over. It’s really frustrating and disappointing, because we have a legitimate chance in the postseason, and I could have been part of it.

This season, Kim has played in 121 games, boasting a batting average of .233, alongside 11 home runs and 22 stolen bases. His contributions on the field have been significant, making his absence felt even more keenly as the Padres gear up for their playoff push.

As for Kim’s future with the Padres, it remains uncertain. He is currently in the final year of a four-year contract, which includes a mutual option for 2025. However, Kim might consider declining that option if he believes he can secure a more lucrative deal in the free agent market.

The news of Kim’s surgery not only affects the Padres’ postseason hopes but also adds a layer of complexity to his career trajectory. Fans and management alike will be watching closely to see how this impacts both his recovery and his status with the team moving forward.

With Kim sidelined, the Padres will need to adjust their lineup and strategies as they strive for success in the playoffs. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the team remains focused on their ultimate goal: competing for a championship despite the challenges ahead.
