Kyren Lacy The Pittsburgh Steelers may not have landed the star receiver they aggressively pursued over the summer, but their current 3-0 record suggests that their passing offense has managed to hold its own without him. However, the team has yet to fully embrace a one-dimensional offense that necessitates a more traditional approach to throwing the ball.
Concerns linger about the depth at the receiver position, and while the team’s strong start is encouraging, it could still be hampered by a lack of options on the outside. Thus, addressing the receiver position remains a top priority for the Steelers as they look ahead to the 2025 NFL Draft.
In a recent mock draft by Sports Illustrated, the Steelers were projected to select 25th overall and opted for LSU receiver Kyren Lacy. Analyst Daniel Flick noted, “Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has a prototype he likes at receiver, and Lacy fits it.” Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 213 pounds, Lacy brings a combination of size and impressive run-after-catch ability that aligns well with Smith’s offensive strategy.
While George Pickens and Calvin Austin III have shown promise at the start of the season, the overall production from the receiver room has been lacking. Outside of Pickens and Austin, no other wide receiver has recorded more than three receptions, and none have exceeded 31 receiving yards. Lacy would be an ideal addition to Pittsburgh’s depth chart, providing a viable boundary threat alongside Pickens.
The prospect of enhancing the receiving corps becomes increasingly appealing, especially as quarterback Justin Fields shows signs of growth and confidence. If Fields secures the starting position for the 2025 season, it will be crucial for the Steelers to develop a more versatile offense that doesn’t rely solely on the running game. Lacy’s ability to perform at all levels of the field and effectively challenge opposing cornerbacks would address a significant gap in the current lineup. This would allow Austin to operate more effectively in the slot, sharing responsibilities with third-round pick Roman Wilson.
Although it’s unlikely that Pittsburgh will navigate the entirety of the season without experiencing the effects of their current receiver struggles, improvements are expected as the front office is determined not to let another offseason go by without addressing this critical position. As the season unfolds, fans will be watching closely to see how the Steelers manage their receiving needs and whether they can find the right solution in the upcoming draft.
