The Chicago Bears have faced challenges in their first three games with Caleb Williams, and players are hoping that a recent meeting with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron will steer them in a better direction.
Veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis shared with Jay Glazer from FOX Sports that he, Williams, and tight end Cole Kmet met privately with Waldron last week to voice their frustrations about the offense. During this discussion, they urged Waldron to adopt a more aggressive coaching style and not hesitate to push the players, regardless of their experience.
“I spoke with Marcedes Lewis last night,” Glazer reported. “He mentioned that he, Cole Kmet, and quarterback Caleb Williams had a private talk with (Shane Waldron), telling him, ‘We’re not a Pop Warner team. You need to coach us up. Even though I’m in year 19, coach me up; coach Caleb up as a rookie. We need you to be more aggressive in your coaching.’ They believe this will lead to improvements.”
The players found the meeting to be constructive, according to Glazer.
In last week’s 21-16 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Williams threw frequently, completing 33 of 52 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns, marking the first two touchdowns of his NFL career, despite also throwing two interceptions.
The Bears currently rank low in total offense after three games. Waldron, in his first year as the Bears’ offensive coordinator, may have been cautious in his approach with Williams. However, both Williams and his teammates feel that Waldron’s strategy has been overly conservative.
Williams implemented one significant change in Week 3, and the Bears may see additional adjustments following their meeting with Waldron.
