STATE COLLEGE — Running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen may not be the most talkative players on the Penn State roster, but when they do speak, their words are clear, assertive, and to the point—much like their powerful running styles that have left rival defenses reeling.
“We always feed off each other,” Singleton shared, highlighting the chemistry that drives their game.
In their recent matchup against then-No. 19 Illinois, the dynamic duo combined for an impressive 196 rushing yards, marking a significant milestone as they became only the second pair of Nittany Lion teammates to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards. They joined the ranks of Penn State legends Franco Harris and Lydell Mitchell, who both achieved this feat in 1971.
Penn State head coach James Franklin praised their performance, stating, “There were physical runs out there today, and I couldn’t be more proud of that group and how they’re playing. That’s going to be important for us the rest of the year.
Currently ranked No. 7, the Nittany Lions boast a record of 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten. They are set to face UCLA (1-3, 0-2) in their fourth consecutive home game this Saturday, but tougher challenges loom on the horizon.
Following this homestand, Penn State will hit the road to take on No. 13 USC and Wisconsin—two teams that have had their struggles defending against the run. The highlight of their upcoming schedule will be a showdown against No. 3 Ohio State on November 2, where the Buckeyes have been formidable, allowing just 62 rushing yards per game.
In the meantime, offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki is committed to utilizing his two standout running backs effectively. He has been alternating between Singleton and Allen throughout games, a strategy that has proven successful. Against Illinois, it was Singleton’s turn first, and he certainly made an impact with notable runs of 14 and 16 yards, setting up a short rushing touchdown by Tyler Warren.
The Nittany Lions have focused on starting games strong, which has been crucial to their success thus far. As they continue to build momentum, the contributions from Singleton and Allen will be pivotal in maintaining their offensive strength and navigating the challenges ahead in their schedule.
With their combination of physicality and teamwork, Singleton and Allen are not just a powerful duo; they are emerging as key players who could shape the trajectory of Penn State’s season as they strive for excellence against tough opponents.
