Miami Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. returned to practice this week after starting the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Beckham expressed his gratitude for being back on the practice field, although he admitted he feels “a bit out of football shape.” He signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in May but missed the first four games of the season due to a knee injury.
“I dislike the feeling of being in this building while injured,” Beckham said. “I can’t practice with the team or be on the field. Not being able to play the first four games is a simple rule.”
He noted that he didn’t want to begin the season on the PUP list but recognized it was the best choice for the team. “I think many people don’t fully understand what I was dealing with. If I’m not on the PUP list, I’m occupying a roster spot, which means I could be taking someone else’s job while not being able to contribute, and that doesn’t feel good. It was ultimately what was best for the team and organization, and it was an easy decision.”
The status of the 31-year-old veteran for Sunday’s game against the Patriots is still uncertain.
In other Dolphins news, pass rusher Jaelan Phillips is set to undergo season-ending knee surgery, and the team is coming off a tough 31-12 loss to the Titans. Beckham, who was drafted 12th overall by the New York Giants in 2014, has faced numerous injuries in recent years after a standout rookie season. Last year, he recorded 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns with the Ravens before being released in March.
