The Green Bay Packers suffered a tough loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, falling by just two points. Quarterback Jordan Love returned from a knee injury to play, but the defeat was especially frustrating for head coach Matt LaFleur, who was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct during the game.
LaFleur’s frustration boiled over when officials failed to notice him trying to call a timeout, prompting him to angrily remove his headset and run onto the field. This outburst caught the referees’ attention, leading to a penalty. Following the incident, LaFleur was fined $14,069 for his actions, as reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
The NFL has been proactive this season in issuing fines to both players and coaches. Many of these fines are aimed at curbing helmet-to-helmet hits initiated by offensive players, with several fines being handed out for actions that went unpenalized during games.
For instance, Packers running back Josh Jacobs received a hefty $45,020 fine for lowering his helmet and making contact with a defender during the team’s Week 3 game against the Tennessee Titans, despite not being flagged for unnecessary roughness at the time. Similarly, Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet was fined $45,020 for a helmet-to-helmet hit in Week 4, also without a penalty being called during the game.
In addition to LaFleur’s fine, the NFL has not been shy about penalizing defensive players either. Two Los Angeles Chargers players combined for $89,177 in fines for illegal hits in Week 4.
The Packers’ loss dropped their record to 2-2 for the season. They will look to bounce back in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams. While Love is expected to return as the starting quarterback, they will be without receiver Romeo Doubs, who has been suspended after skipping practice in protest over his perceived reduced role in the offense.
