The St. Louis Cardinals faced significant challenges early in the season but have since orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, placing them in a pivotal position as the trade deadline approaches.
Currently occupying the second spot in the National League Central, the Cardinals are confronted with a crucial decision: whether to pursue acquisitions or make moves to bolster their roster. Among potential targets, one player drawing attention is a Miami Marlins pitcher.
“Miami Marlins left-hander Jesús Luzardo is currently sidelined with a lumbar stress reaction, with his return not expected before August 18,” reported USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Sunday. “However, interest in his availability remains high, as teams see him as a valuable addition for the postseason push.”
Luzardo’s performance this season includes a 5.00 ERA over 66 2/3 innings, with a 58-to-22 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .246 batting average against, and a 1.25 WHIP. Despite these numbers, his potential has been evident in previous seasons.
In his last two seasons, Luzardo showcased promise with a combined 3.48 ERA (128 ERA+), a 328-to-90 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .223 batting average against, and a 1.15 WHIP across 50 starts.
At 26 years old and under contract through 2026, Luzardo represents a significant opportunity for the Cardinals to strengthen their rotation, which currently holds a collective 4.39 team ERA. His acquisition could provide stability to an aging pitching staff facing uncertainties beyond this season.
Securing Luzardo would likely require a substantial investment in prospects, yet the potential long-term benefits of acquiring a potential frontline starter without increasing immediate payroll obligations could make it a prudent move for the Cardinals.
