Aaron Rodgers, the former Green Bay Packers quarterback, has had a tumultuous start to the 2024 NFL season. After missing all of 2023 due to a torn Achilles, the 40-year-old made his return to the field this year with the New York Jets.
The Jets had high hopes for Rodgers when they traded for him, believing the four-time NFL MVP could revitalize their offense and help push the team toward a Super Bowl run. However, the team’s 2024 season has been a far cry from those expectations.
At 3-7 entering Week 11, the Jets are in a deep hole and appear unlikely to make the playoffs. Despite some offseason moves, including firing head coach Robert Saleh, trading for star wide receiver Davante Adams, and signing pass rusher Haason Reddick, the Jets have struggled to find success on the field.
Rodgers, while certainly not solely to blame, has not played up to his usual standards. Through the first 10 games of the season, he has completed 219 of 351 passes, totaling 2,258 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. His performance has been inconsistent, and the Jets’ offense has struggled to find any rhythm.
However, it’s important to note that much of the Jets’ poor start this season cannot be placed squarely on Rodgers’ shoulders. The team has dealt with a variety of issues, including offensive line struggles, a lack of consistent playmakers, and defensive inconsistencies. Still, as the leader of the team, Rodgers is expected to elevate the play of those around him, and that hasn’t always been the case this season.
Despite the struggles in 2024, Rodgers has shown no indication that his desire to continue playing is waning. When asked about his plans for 2025, he responded with a simple four-word answer: “I think so, yeah,” signaling that he intends to play at least one more season.
Rodgers is under contract with the Jets for the 2025 season, with the possibility of becoming a free agent in 2026. If he remains in New York, the Jets may need to make further adjustments, particularly in finding a new head coach who can work with Rodgers’ unique style and elevate the team’s performance.
The Packers, who traded Rodgers away after 18 seasons, have managed a respectable 15-11 record since the deal. Quarterback Jordan Love has stepped into the starting role, guiding the team to a Wild Card playoff victory over the Dallas Cowboys in January.
The Packers’ ability to transition smoothly without Rodgers may provide added pressure for the Jets to find success in 2025, as they’ve invested heavily in the future with the hopes that Rodgers can still deliver one more championship-caliber season.
