Today, Dave Pagnotta provided a small update on the Penguins. Pittsburgh GM Kyle Dubas had previously hinted that Joel Blomqvist might be one of the team’s goaltenders next season. However, it’s now reported that Dubas’ comments were misunderstood. The Penguins have not ruled out retaining Alex Nedeljkovic, who can become a UFA on July 1. The team is maintaining open communication with Nedeljkovic’s agent, Rich Evans, about a possible return.

It appears the Penguins are wisely not planning to rely on the 22-year-old Blomqvist, who has no NHL experience, as their second goalie. Goalie development is often unpredictable, even though Blomqvist had a strong first season in the AHL.

Nedeljkovic played well for Pittsburgh late in the season, but his overall stats were not impressive, making his potential re-signing a careful consideration. Ideally, the Penguins would like to keep him on a short-term deal, though this may not be the best option for Nedeljkovic as he approaches from.

Penguins and Trade Prospects

Pagnotta also mentioned Winnipeg forward Nikolaj Ehlers, noting that the Penguins were not listed as potential suitors. Ehlers, who is coming off a 61-point season with limited ice time, is not interested in extending his contract with Winnipeg. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is exploring trade options for him.

Several teams, including the New York Islanders, Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, Seattle Kraken, New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, and Columbus Blue Jackets, are seeking a top-six winger like Ehlers.

Despite his talent, the Penguins are unlikely candidates to acquire Ehlers. He will be a free agent in 2025, looking for a significant contract, and Winnipeg seeks NHL-ready talent, which Pittsburgh lacks. Reilly Smith, even without a no-trade clause, likely wouldn’t be enough to entice Winnipeg.

While Ehlers’ situation is worth monitoring, especially if a division rival shows interest, the Penguins might not be a fitting match for him at this stage. However, if GM Kyle Dubas wants to make a bold move, Ehlers would be a significant addition to the team’s skillset.
