Nicks Foles, who played last with the Indianapolis Colts during the 2022-23 season, shared in a video message that he wants to spend more time with his family.
Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012 from the University of Arizona, Nicks Foles spent his initial five seasons as a backup until he stepped up during the 2017-18 season when Carson Wentz was injured. Foles then guided the Eagles to a Super Bowl LII win, defeating Tom Brady’s New England Patriots 41-33, and was named Super Bowl MVP.
His rapid ascent over those seven games turned him into a Philadelphia icon, with his legacy cemented by “The Philly Special”—the memorable Super Bowl trick play in which he scored a touchdown.
Following that peak, Foles struggled to secure a starting role, failing to make double-digit appearances in each of the next five seasons while playing for four different teams.
The Philadelphia Eagles acknowledged Foles’ contributions on Thursday and announced that he will be officially retired as an Eagle during their home opener against Atlanta on September 16.
